Payment Requirements
Your fall housing balance MUST be paid by Friday, August 28, 2009 in order to move into your on-campus room. Financial aid will begin dispersing on August 25, 2009. If there is a balance on your student account after your financial aid disperses, you must pay off the balance or have a payment plan in place through Student Accounts Receivable. Please note, any payments made to your student account will pay tuition & fees first (if you plan to pay the housing bill in order to move in, but your tuition has not been paid, it will pay your tuition and fees, leaving you with a housing balance, and you will not be able to move in).
If you are enrolled in a payment plan you must pay at least 25% of the total room and board charges before August 28, 2009 in order to move into your room. Payment plans with AMS and TMS must be established before move-in day.
Move-In Passes
Students who have met the payment requirements will be able to move into the hall at their assigned date and time. Prior to move-in, students who are “cleared” to move-in will receive a move-in pass by mail or email (in late August). You will need to bring this pass with you on move-in day and show it before you unload your vehicle and again at the check-in table. Check-in will take place in our courtyard area between Atchison and Ghafari halls which is accessible from Anthony Wayne Drive in the unloading area.
Immunization Form
All students living in university residence halls are required to complete an immunization form before moving in. Forms can be returned to:
Campus Health Center
Attn: Immunizations
5200 Anthony Wayne Dr.
Suite 115
Detroit, MI 48202
Meal Plan Information
Meal Service officially begins with breakfast on Monday, August 31st. (We’ll be having a picnic for residents after check in on Sunday evening, August 30th.) Residents will need to swipe their One Card at the entrance to the cafeteria for each meal. There are 23 meal periods during the week in which a student can use their 15 or 19 meals. Students may increase their meal plan at any time or add Warrior Dollars to their One Card to pay for extra meals or use at eateries across campus. The 15-meal plan comes with $100 Warrior Dollars to use at campus eateries. Warrior Dollars can only be spent on food. One Card Dollars are different and may be used in various ways including for laundry machines, vending machines, and at Barnes and Noble. One Card machines are available in the lobbies of various campus buildings to allow students to add money to their One Cards.
Because meal plans do not begin until Monday, the Office of Housing and Residential Life will be sponsoring a BBQ for residents from 5-7pm on Move-In Day in the Warrior Dining area for new residents of Ghafari and Atchison Halls. See our activities flyer for more information.

Unloading

- Enter Anthony Wayne Drive from Warren in order to enter the correct drop off lane. Show your move-in pass to the move-in volunteers directing traffic. DON’T FORGET YOUR MOVE-IN PASS!
- Lane 1: Use this lane to pull up, unload your belongings onto the curb, and immediately move your car to Structure 2 or the Open Surface Parking Lot #41 in front of the structure.
- Lane 3: Use this lane for through traffic – friends that have driven separate to help you move, family, etc should use this lane to proceed directly to the parking structure or lot.
Parking on Move-In Day
Structure 2 will be open and free of charge for those students and their move in crew to park. For any oversized vehicles, such as moving trucks, vehicles towing trailers, etc. the open surface lot #41 in front of Structure 2 will be open and free of charge. It is important that you unload your belongings on the sidewalk and immediately move your car to avoid a traffic backup and keep cars moving efficiently.
Students should go to the check-in area in the Courtyard between Ghafari and Atchison halls to check-in and get their room key.
Warrior Welcome Crew
WWC includes students returning to live in housing, as well as volunteers from student organizations and the university community. These individuals will be available to assist you with watching belongings at the curb, carrying belongings to rooms, assisting with carts, or giving directions.
Check In
When you check in, you will complete a registration card and receive a room key. You will also receive a room inventory form. The residence hall staff will assist you in assessing the condition of your room. The room inventory form is used when you move out to determine if damage charges will be billed to you.
Resident Orientation
The evening of your move-in you will be required to meet with your Resident Advisor for a floor meeting to discuss important hall information and policies. This is also a time to meet the other individuals on your floor and ask any questions that you may have about classes, the iStart program, Move-in weekend activities, etc. This meeting is mandatory for all residence hall students.
Istart
The Istart Program is a fall orientation program designed to assist new students in their transition to campus living at Wayne State University. Istart Leaders will help engage students in Welcome Back Week activities, conduct campus tours, and act as part of a peer support systems as the first-year students transition into their first week of college life. This program is required for freshmen and recommended for transfer students.
Personal Emergency Planning
Wayne State University and our residence hall staff prioritize the safety and security of our community members. We continually plan for issues or concerns; however unlikely, that may arise during the academic year. We also encourage individual community members to make plans and preparations for their personal safety and accommodation. Click here for a student preparedness checklist and resource page that will assist with planning for emergencies.
Recommendations and Tips for a Successful Move-In Process
- Have patience during the move-in process. Over 1,500 students will be moving into our halls over a two day period.
- Pack and bring only what you need for a few days. Some suggested items for move-in day include: bedding and bathroom accessories, computer, television, microwave, refrigerator, cleaning supplies, lamps, telephone, cable cord, Ethernet cord, and limited clothing. You may bring extra items from home after Labor Day weekend.
- We have limited numbers of moving carts and mallets. If you think you will need these items, we suggest you bring your own. We will have a check-out for the mallets and moving carts, but the items will be available on a first come, first serve basis, and the waiting list will likely be very lengthy.
- If possible, bring extra people to help move your items. We have limited parking/unloading space in front of our halls. You will be expected to quickly unload your items onto the sidewalk by your assigned building and then move your vehicle into the parking structure or surface lot. We recommend that you have someone with you to stay with your belongings while you move through the check-in process.
- Please remember to pay your housing bill by Friday, August 28, 2009.
- Bring your Move-In Pass, Student ID (OneCard) and wear comfortable clothes.
Semester Breaks/Closing Procedure
Accommodations are available for occupancy in keeping with the WSU academic calendar. Ghafari and Atchison Hall residents may not occupy rooms during university breaks of four days or longer. The residence hall is closed during the break between the fall and winter semesters although you may leave your belongings in your room. The residence hall is also closed during spring break.
Moving Out
Residents who are moving out of their room are asked to make an appointment with an residence assistant (available anytime during the year) to complete the room inventory form. Your participation in the move-out inventory is strongly recommended. Students may choose to use the “Express Check-Out” option. Students utilizing this option will be responsible for all damages assessed to the room. “Express Check-Out”-assessed damages can not be contested.
