Position Overview

Residential Peer Mentor (RPM)

The Resident Peer Mentor (RPM) is a student staff position within the Office of Housing and Residential Life. Housing and Residential Life is committed to a comprehensive Residential Life program – one that blends academic with co-curricular activities to create a total educational environment in which all residents are assisted and supported while increasing their ability to be successful, with a focus on Academic Engagement and Success. RPMs are key links in creating this environment. The quality of their efforts has a significant, direct bearing upon the quality of life experienced by all members of the residential community.

RPMs will have a specialized focus on supporting first year student transitions and are required to facilitate events and programs in line with the First Year Residential Experience (FYRE) programming model and with the First Year Interest Group (FIG) assigned to the community, if applicable. RPMs will be responsible for 1 academic-success event per month, utilizing campus resources and campus partners. Additionally, RPMs will work with RAs and LLC Peer Mentors. RPMs will also plan and participate in all-campus first-year student social events and assist Community and Associate Directors with communication to residents pertaining to academic student success and persistence. Lastly, RPMs will be responsible for hosting standard study table hours both for general academic success and for specific classes alongside faculty and/or tutors from the peer-assisted learning program.

Time Commitment

Required to work 15 hours per week at a pay rate of $15.00 per hour

Eligibility

  • Must have successfully completed 30 credit hours during time of employment.
  •  Must maintain a minimum 3.0 GPA both semester and cumulative.
  •  Must be in good academic and disciplinary standing with Wayne State University
  •  All off-campus employment must be approved by supervisor. Employment may not conflict with programs, meetings or trainings. Outside employment/internships are limited to 15 hours per week, though this is at the discretion of the supervisor and is subject to change.
  • Priority will be given to students who live on campus*

Responsibilities

  • Work with all RPMs to plan and develop one monthly Academic Engagement and Success Program
  •  Market and promote monthly programs
  •  Host weekly one hour drop-in sessions around resources and opportunities for academic engagement and success
  • Host weekly study tables
  • Create a monthly educational bulletin board located on the first floor of assigned building
  • Work with the Community Director to create 15-minute trainings/learning opportunities for each RA staff meeting
  • Attend RA weekly staff meetings and trainings CRATES
  • Research and stay up to date on Academic succuss topics, events on campus, and resources
  • Attend weekly 1:1s with Community Director and RPM group meetings with Associate Director for Student Success
  • Develop on-going mentor relationships with students in the FYRE Community individually and within the FIG (if applicable)
  • Establish communication channels with assigned students using email, canvas, or other means
  • Maintain and submit records as assigned
  • Meet and communicate with LLC partners as assigned
  • Work to build and maintain relationships with Campus Partners and find resources
  • Assist in the opening and closing of the hall each semester and during break periods, as coordinated by the Community Director. This will require early arrival in the fall and an extended stay at the end of the academic year as directed by supervisor. Assist with inventory, bed checks, etc. as needed during move-in and move-out periods.
  • Be available to help with move in, move outs, and recruitment and sections processes.
  • Other duties as assigned

Supervision

Associate Director, Housing and Residential Life directly supervises the Residential Peer Mentors. Community Directors will act as an indirect supervisor within the community.
